Starting in 1992 in Canada, a Buy Nothing Day has been organized where people are encouraged to not buy any goods for an entire day. The awareness day has since been accepted by many other countries which has raised question: Should a day like this be in action worldwide? However, most people are quick to think of their own personal benefits during awareness days, like simply having a day off work, and lose focus on the true meaning behind those days. Because of that coupled with the near impossibility of enforcing a day like this, therefore an annual Buy Nothing Day shouldn’t be exercised throughout the world. (Claim) There are many reasons an annual Buy Nothing Day should not be in action worldwide. First and foremost, the human race has thrived and gotten where it is today because of humans natural desire to want more, and a day to increase awareness for overconsumption cuts the very heart of our society’s progress. 100 years ago, people were tired of riding uncomfortable trains. They wanted more. This desire for more caused the invention of cars, which has revolutionized our world. However, overconsumption is not the cause of environmental problems in our society. Issues like pollution and overpopulation are the biggest problems to our environment. And so the skeptics are wrong at the very core of their argument. And to further refute their claim, one day out of the entire year would not change our environmental status. If people want change, they should go out and be the change, not try to create an awareness day for a particular topic that will be taken advantage of or not cared for by many people.
