Abortion is one of the most controversial topics in America today. Many people try to avoid talking about this topic all together because of its sensitivity and the divisive nature of the subject matter. The Webster dictionary defines abortion as “the termination of a pregnancy after, accompanied by, resulting in, or closely followed by the death of the embryo or fetus”. Many believe that it is the women’s right to deal with her pregnancy however she chooses, while others believe that when someone has an abortion they are taking the life away from a baby and are ultimately murdering it.The Freedom of choice act was first introduced to congress in 1989. After the decision to legalize abortion, made by the Supreme Court, problems began to grow in America as many fought for the life of the baby that was being aborted. The uproar in the nation caused the court to rethink the decision that was made.Because of this Congress came back together and created The Freedom of Choice Act. Their plan was to modify their ideas of how abortion should be viewed and about the freedom for women to make their own choices about their pregnancies. As a result of this the Freedom of Choice Act was created. The Freedom of Choice Act prevents both state and federal governments from intervening in women’s personal lives and choices. The government, under the Freedom of Choice Act, could no longer control a woman’s decision to have a baby, use birth control, or even to have an abortion. The act states that every woman has the “fundamental right” to end a pregnancy.Of course, there are people who are for and against this act.
