If I could choose to work in any career field for the next 30 years I would choose to be an activist. Activism is a vital part of creating change that will enhance the lives of every member of our society. I say member because citizenship is not required to treat each other with dignity and respect. We are all human beings with thoughts, feelings, and families, and we all have the need to feel like we are a part of something greater than ourselves. Our differences are a huge part of what makes this world so beautiful, and our similarities are what bring us together and make us so strong. I myself experienced criticism from family members because I am unwilling to back down from my beliefs. For example, my aunt and her daughter constantly harassed me on Facebook after I shared an article about how African American children as young as 4 years old were far more likely to be suspended than their white counterparts. I was met with a constant stream of fight videos and nasty comments. Not only was I completely taken aback by the words that were coming out of their mouths, I was heartbroken because I realized that if I wanted to have any sort of life I would no longer be able to stay in contact with them. I couldn’t believe that either of them would judge an entire population of people based on the actions of a very small percentage especially since my cousins’ father was deported after entering the country illegally. Not to mention that not only does my aunt have mixed race children, she has siblings who are mixed race as well. Until that moment in my life I had honestly believed that every member of my family embraced diversity the same way that I do.
