After high school most students find themselves asking, “What am I going to do now?”
Most would probably say they will continue school by going to college. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, in 2013, 65.9 percent of high school graduates of that year enrolled in a community college or a university (Bureau of Labor Statistics). The choice of attending college is an important step for a person’s future, expanding their education in hopes of achieving a better career with a high pay. A good education is very valuable nowadays, there is a reason why everyone goes through 13 years or so of school, and is then given an option to even further their own education even more by attending college. Beyond the stereotype that people that only have a high school diploma can only find a job at fast food restaurants, such as, McDonalds or Burger King. Dawn Rosenberg McKay, a career planning expert, points out that there are some jobs that can be attained with only a high school diploma. Some of these jobs are: cashier, cosmetologist, an assistant or aide of some sort, working in retail as a sales person (McKay). Why just stop going to school after high school and accept one of these jobs? When getting a college degree can lead to a person being the one hiring the cashiers, be the one with assistants and the manager, or owner of a retail store. The reality is any place that is hiring will choose a person with a college degree over a person that only completed high school. The importance of a college degree is significant, having one opens up many opportunities in a person’s pursuit for a career.
