According to World Wide Fund for Nature, “Data reveals Amur leopards in Russia’s Land of the Leopard National Park now number at least 57 cats (up from just 30 cats in 2007). And an additional 8-12 leopards were counted in adjacent areas of China.” At least 200 species go extinct every 24 hours. At the end of this class probably about 9 more species die out. But don’t worry too much, it’s mostly bacteria. And why should you care about the most critically endangered animal in the world? If any species corresponds to at least one of these bullet points, then by the Endangered Species Act will be placed on the List. A species is declared extinct after many years of not being spotted. Because it takes so long to define an entire species as extinct, it is probable that there are many species already gone that we are unaware of. Hopefully in a few years, the amur leopards numbers will begin to grow and will slowly go down on the list. It’s unfortunate that it got to only 30 leopards in 2007 before the Russian government started to take action to preserve these animals. Although there was anti-poaching laws and regulations toward the leopard, Russia’s government did not heavily enforce them. I am optimistic that in the future there will be more steps taken to conserve these very rare and exotic animals, because it is our responsibility to ensure animal
