Scout shows she realizes what being a girl really is while watching others. “Calpurnia seemed glad to see me when I appeared in the kitchen, and by watching her I began to think there was some skill involved in being a girl”(Lee 115/116). Scout has had her standards of what women should be by her brother, but once Scout sees Calpurnia working she realizes otherwise - to show her womanly traits instead of hiding them. “I was not so sure, but Jem told me I was being a girl, that girls always imagined things, that's why other people hated them so, and if I started behaving like one I could just go off and find some to play with”(Lee 41). Scout has always been taught that girls are bad, and boys have everything that could ever be good - she can not be one of the bad girls if she doesn't act like one.
Scout is very obviously dedicated to her brother Jem. He often criticizes her for “Acting like a girl”. For this reason Scout grows up far away from the typical way daughters are raised. She plays outside in the dirt, dresses in overalls, and hates dressing like a typical lady. Scout’s very slight change into a lady is majorly affected by her own Aunt Alexandra.
Part of Scout growing up and maturing is realizing her identity as a woman. In the book, this theme is shown by having many feminine influences in her life. On the other hand, the movie excludes these characters. An example of this would include Aunt Alexandra. Other characters’ roles were minimized in Scout’s life, like Miss Maudie and Calpurnia.
When I was younger, doing Girl Scouts was something I took seriously, even if it seemed silly to me at the time. Every week we would plant flowers and take care of the garden at a local senior center for at least two hours. Girl

Attending Camp Green Lake not only changes the mindset of these boys but it also develops their personality. This is important because teenage years are the most fun but also one of the most important in a person's life. Jem and Scout both discourage gender roles because Jem does not want Scout whining ‘like a girl’ and Scout wants to be treated as an equal not as a girl. There has been a lot of conversation about whether child beauty pageants are something we should be involving our children in. These types of pageants have recently been thrust into the public eye. There are movies, such as “Painted Babies at 17” and “Little Miss Sunshine”, and television shows, like “Toddlers and Tiaras” and “Here Comes Honey Boo Boo”, that show different views of pageants. These shows include everything from the children before the pageant to the contestants on stage and even to their temper tantrums back stage. Besides the entertainment industry, there has been talk about rules and laws concerning pageants.

Beauty Pageants are events which women and younger girls or boys compete in across the world but the most popular country for these pageants are USA. The age requirements start at 3 years for both girls and boys, I feel this is too young an age to start brainwashing them. Many critics claim that the beauty pageants place more emphasis on the physical aspects of the body and over look the other aspects. This is what causes these pageants to be so unhealthy for the younger children competing.
