Imagine walking into the courtroom to marry the person you’re planning on spending the rest of your life with. You walk up to the judge and declare your love for your significant other but the judge tells you, “Sorry, you’re not allowed to marry him”. You ask the judge why and they tell you it’s because you’re “different”. Your tears, hot and salty, stream down your face as you look to the judge and try to make him see that you are no different than any other couple, to no avail. You leave the courtroom without another word. This is the heartbreak that homosexual couples go through every day. There are ten amendments that we live by everyday but one that speaks to the homosexual community the most is the ‘Freedom of Religion’. Many people believe that marriage is a religious act but that is very incorrect. Marriage is just a piece of paper stating that two people are together but the religious ceremony is a CHOICE. It was never stated that the marriage had to be between a man and a woman. According to www.gaymarriage.procon.org, the Constitution technically protects liberty and equality within gay rights because in 1974 the Supreme Court ruled that “freedom of personal choice in matters of marriage and family life is one of the liberties protected by the Due Process Clause.” It is never acceptable to discriminate against others in America and denying homosexual couples the option to marry makes them feel inferior. Homosexual couples also don’t receive the same benefits that a straight couple receives. For example, when a partner dies in a couple that is straight, the widow receives over 1100 legal rights including tax benefits, social security benefits, and death benefits. The list is endless. Unfortunately, when a homosexual partner dies, they receive nothing. If the homosexual couple has children and one partner dies, there is a risk that the child can be taken away. If America is based on “equality and freedom”, why are we denying basic civil rights to human
