For years gay marriage has been an issue particularly in the United States. So many countries allow same sex couples to get married but not all states in the United States agree with allowing same sex couples to be married legally. The Supreme Court has gone back and forth on this issue plenty of times and it has come down to moral and religious views and simply what people think is right or wrong. Marriage is defined as a union between two individuals. Whether the two individuals are male and female, two males, or two females everyone has a right to be married. Colson uses the reasoning that same sex marriage would cause families to collapse, would cause children to be more likely to commit crimes, and also cause couples to have children out of wedlock. Pollitt uses examples of different religions like Protestantism who support “gay lifestyle” but do not support gay marriage. As much as they support the lifestyle the do not believe they should get the chance to experience the spiritual union of marriage. On the other hand, Colson leaves us off saying “ If we fail to enact a Federal Marriage Amendment, we can expect, not just more family breakdown, but also more criminals behind bars and more chaos in our streets” (Colson). Having two people of the same sex getting married does not cause all these problems, these things can occur in any type of marriage. Two people of the same sex can raise a strong stable family and be law-abiding citizens. Fortunately, on June 26, 2015 the Supreme Court declared that same sex marriage was legal in all 50 states. Prior to this news only 20 states allowed same sex marriage. State level bans of same sex marriage were decisively deemed to be unconstitutional; this settled a long going dispute. Same sex couples in states that did not allow them to get married have been waiting for years to hear this kind of news. So many people went out and got married as soon as it became official.
