Did you know that about 20 percent of the US population are homosexual in some way? This is ⅕ of the population, and still 33% of the same population say that these people shouldn’t have rights to marriage. Just because someone is the same sex as their partner, doesn’t mean they can’t have the same rights as a couple with opposite sexes. People over the years have been fighting for the right to marry, and they continue to do so. The freedom of marriage should be a civil right, no matter what race, gender, or sexuality the person is. Equal rights for same sex marriages need to be recognized and upheld.

Unfortunately, it didn’t make prohibition of same sex couples illegal, but it made people start to think about making same sex marriage legal. It made gay rights supporters happy knowing that same sex marriage could be legal soon. Same sex rights marches and events are widely common in the US. One known as the Stonewall riots happened in 1969, when police raided a bar called the Stonewall Inn, in the neighborhood of Greenwich Village, New York City. Residents of Greenwich rioted and protested for several days, because they just wanted a place to express their sexuality without the fear of being judged or arrested. Many protests still take place on this day, honoring those who attended. June is known as pride month, the same month of the Stonewall riots. Many parades and marches are held around the United States, and they are a great way of showing their support for same sex marriage. Homosexuality was once considered a disorder, and still is in some areas of the world. In 1968, the official mental disorder book for the United States put homosexuality as a disorder. Five years later, in 1973, it was removed by a vote by members of the APA (American Psychiatric Association). 5,854 asked to remove it from the book, and 3,910 asked to keep it in the book.
