They say a child is easier to influence than an adult; do you know why that is? A child is like a blank slate, uninformed of anything , therefore malleable contrary to an adult. 1984 is a dystopian novel written by George Orwell. The most convenient way to keep the population in check is by having an uninformed proletariat; reasons being that the proletariat cannot unite, they become easier to manipulate, and it is easiest course of action. If a person does not know an idea exists, then he cannot execute that idea. “If there was hope, it must lie in the primes, because only there, in those swarming disregarded masses, either -fifty percent of the population of Oceania, could the force to destroy the party ever be generated” (Orwell 69). “The story really began in the middle sixties, the period of the greats purges in which the original learns of the revolution were wiped out once and for all”(Orwell 75). The party leaders kill many people during these times to cover up the past. This course of action was easy to issue and has little margins of error. This course of actions is easier than dedicating an entire ministry to torture or changing the past. Although many of these lead to the proletariat becoming dumber, they are not a necessity. All the party needs to do is burn some books, and give the proletariat an addiction or pleasure that they can succumb to, such as gambling or consuming mass amounts of alcohol. One could say that rationing is a simple process and it would leave people hungry, therefore too distracted to think. It would be impossible to hide the large amounts of food they have from a literate populace. Rationing would result in horrendous amounts of revolts.
