Some natural resources, such as fossil fuels and natural gas are running dangerously low and could be used up in less than 40 years from now. (Howstuffswork.com) Time is running out to find a more cleaner, and reusable energy source. However, what people don’t know is, we may already have that answer lying beneath our feet, geothermal energy. The prefix "geo-" means earth and the root "thermal" means heat. Geothermal power plants use the heat radiating from the center of the Earth to generate electricity and, in Iceland, to heat the entire cities.(National Energy Authority of Iceland (NEA).com) In many parts of the world, Geo-Thermal energy is under-utilized and should be promoted since it is pollution free, renewable, and capable of supplying electricity to millions of families. Countries such as Philippines, Indonesia, Mexico, countries of Central and South America, and countries in Eastern Africa and in Eastern Europe. Italy, Iceland, New Zealand, Japan and France, along with the United States all have this asset avalible to fund their energy supplying effort, they have been using it but its not even close to being fully utilized. An estimate shows that this energy resource can supply 13% of the world’s total energy consumption rate. Sadly, this energy is a non-profitable resource and we can only utilize a small amount of its entire potential, even though the worldwide consumption rate of energy is nowhere near the amount stored in the underground. However, it is still able to supply 2 out of 15% electricity to the world. As of right now the total mega watts produced by Geo-Thermal power plants in America total 3000 Mega Watts, its not even close to installed Geo-Thermal heating capacity that it can be able to supply, which is about 40000 megawatts of capacity
