Many people know what the Guantanamo Bay detention camp is, but very few people actually know what happens there. Guantanamo Bay, also known as “Gitmo,” is often thought of as the place where terrorists go. What people don’t know, is how these people are being treated and being stripped of their rights as humans. There have been quite a few allegations of torture, abuse, and inhumane acts being committed to these prisoners. Even though they are prisoners, and possibly terrorists, they still have human rights. Some of these people do not even know why they are being held in this place. Imagine being in a place where you are taken for unknown reasons, and then being tortured for information you do not know. One prisoner has even published his diary that he kept while he was incarcerated there. By sharing his point of view of all the things he was put through by the guards there, it gives the public a first-hand account of the treachery that occurs. He shares his stories of being beaten and sexually assaulted during the 12 years he was locked up at Guantanamo. Mohamedou Ould Slahi states, in an article written about his book, “I have never felt as violated in myself as I had since the (US Department of Defense) team started to torture me to get me (to) admit to things I haven’t done” (Golgowski 2). Through the words of Slahi, the reader can feel the raw emotions of what he felt while being imprisoned at Guantanamo. No human being should have to be tortured for crimes they know nothing about. The unethical way the prisoners are treated is a direct reflection on the United States as a whole.
