Earlier this months, on valentine’s day, 17 people were killed by a 19-year-old former student who was able to legally purchase an Ar-15 assault rife. The irony that this man can purchase a deadly assault weapon but cannot buy a beer is almost enough to laugh. Almost. Among first world countries, the United States is one of the worst for deaths by guns, both homicides and suicides. Every other first world country has extensive restrictions on gun access and see much lower rates of gun violence and gun death in comparison to America. This is an issue that seems like it has an easy fix, but instead gridlock remains and people continued to be murdered because of how easy it is to get a gun in our country. Except, on this one, the gun control critics are actually right. Those countries that so many people often point to do not have gun control- they have almost total gun bans. Of course a place like Chicago will have a lot of gun violence because people can just go to another city or state and buy a gun. Democratic politicians often fight for assault weapons bans, but do not give details on how this would occur. Even if it did, there would still be semi-automatic guns (like an AR-15) that are available to public, meaning the threat of gun violence is not close to eliminated. We have plenty evidence that moderate gun control does not work and that is why the U.S. government should control firearms by banning them completely. So, it is worth noting that even for moderate restrictions like banning bump stocks and improving background checks, congress will not do anything about
