In the United States, more than 30,000 deaths are caused by firearms per year. The amount of people who die as a result of guns is higher than the population of small towns. This is clearly a huge a problem that needs to be addressed. The sale of rifles should be banned and there should be tighter restrictions on the purchase of firearms in the United States because rifles serve no purpose other than to kill indiscriminately, guns are the leading cause of unintentional deaths and suicides, and countries with fewer guns have much lower murder and violence rates.
The United States has one of the highest murder rates in the world. When compared to other developed countries it has the second highest murder rate, only behind Spain. Furthermore, other developed countries, with very strict gun laws, have seen far less murders, especially with guns. Australia and the United Kingdom, countries with very strict gun control, both have an intentional homicide rate one per one hundred thousand, while the United states has a rate of four per hundred thousand. Even though, this three person difference may not seem like a lot, when scaled to the population it is easy to see how this is a problem. From 2009 to 2013 there were 38 mass shootings in the United States. The next highest amount was three, in Germany. Additionally, 75 percent of mass murders in the US were carried out with assault rifles. Without rifles, the casualties of mass murders would very rarely reach above 10. Rifles can inflict much more damage than pistols and shotguns in a fraction of the time. They have larger magazines, larger caliber rounds, and are easier to control than any other firearm.
