This immigration reform scenario also comes with immense political connections. According to Census Bureau Data, the U.S.’s population is comprised of approximately 14 percent immigrants, which is more than 43M people. With such large a number, it has created political tension in America. Especially, during the presidential campaign of President Trump, immigration became a very controversial topic. For the last decade or so, Congress has debated some comprehensive and some fragmented pieces of immigration legislation; which addressed mostly interior enforcement, border security, legalization of illegal migrants and demand for low-skilled and high-skilled labor.
In 2013, then President Obama came very close to immigration reform and passed a comprehensive reform bill which allowed the illegal immigrants to obtain citizenship, but it was rejected by the Republican-led House of Representatives. But the arrival of President Donald J. Trump triggered a new fight against illegal immigration and has decided to construct a wall on the U.S./Mexico border to stop illegal immigration, while opposing a temporary ban on six other countries’ immigrants.
