The violence between the Israelis and Palestinians has been going on since the 1920’s. It did not erupted into a full scale war until World War ll. After World War l the Arab Palestinians were struggling to gain independence from the Zionist movement; who had stolen their land and part of their government. During World War ll one of the leaders of the Mandate of Palestine had a meeting with Hitler and explained that if Hitler opposed the movement of creating a national homeland for the Jews, they would support his war. After the war the newly formed United Nations decided that the Israelis and Palestinians would be independent states. While the idea of the UN was a good one it did not really solve a lot of the conflict. Instead of leaving the states as independent with one government; they should have become two separate states with two separate governments. To understand why this solution is the best we need to look at the problems both the Israelis and Palestinians face in everyday life.
The Palestinians have been discriminated against since the 1940’s. When the UN placed the Jews in their homeland of Israel the Philistines were kicked out of their homes and forced into refugee camps. Now that the Israelis have taken over most of Palestine their issues are even worse. Not only are they still in camps, but they being mistreated by the Israeli military. Back in the 1960’s this was the best solution the UN could come up with, it’s still the best solution even now in the 21st century. This would allow the Israelites to keep their heritage and demographic in the same area while Palestinian can become its own state. When solving this kind of issue there are always going to be set backs; like the Israelis controlling the West Bank, or the fact that both cultures claim that Jerusalem is it’s “undivided” capital. There is also the issue of the refugees that occupy the West Bank, and the safety of both states should conflict arise again. But there are resolutions to these problems, as long as both sides agree to compromise. The border issue can go along with West Bank and refugee problems. If the Israli’s were to give up the portion that the Palestinians have set up a community and have their military retract their forces; this would give the Palestinians their land, safety, and independence. As for Jerusalem we know that both sides will not give up what they consider their “holy land.” The proposed solution for this would turn it in to a Vatican City type establishment.
