Is using marijuana okay if you have an illness? In various states and countries around the world medical marijuana is being legalized, but, should it be acceptable to legalize a potentially harmful drug? This question has been discussed by many, however, it is still a controversial topic worldwide. In this essay the legalization of medical marijuana will be discussed. Medical marijuana should be legalized because it is not as harmful as people usually think it is, however, it should only be available to people who need to treat certain illnesses. The drug has also been proven to have no effect on healthy adolescents, it has shown to lessen female and male suicides in places where marijuana is legalized, and has minimized the opioid overdoses. People usually say Marijuana is very bad and is a gateway drug that will eventually lead people into consuming drugs that can and will end in an overdose, nonetheless there are cases in which it is exactly the opposite “ In a recent study of MMLs and opioid overdoses,18 state MMLs were associated with reductions in the annual rate of state- level opioid overdoses” (Kim, Santaella-Tenorio, Mauro, Wrobel, Cerdà, Keyes & Guohua, 2016, para. 3).
