Current laws and policies that interfere with patients receiving medical marijuana as treatment makes caregivers incompetent. Indiana’s policy that permits marijuana treatments to patients with epilepsy lacks competence in that all other patients are denied such treatment. Researchers have found that many other individuals suffering various health conditions can benefit from access to medical marijuana. Conducting research in the US on the medical benefits of marijuana are limited due to many restrictions imposed by the federal government (Rubens, M. p. 123). Having a better understanding of all the health benefits marijuana does for a patient’s condition makes the caregiver more competent in providing services to those in need. “The National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) remains the only legal body authorized to cultivate large amounts of marijuana in a special extension site of the University of Mississippi and distribute it for clinical research within the country” (Rubens, M. p. 122). The supply of marijuana is limited; therefore, little research can be conducted in the US to help caregivers such as doctors, federal and state legislators, and the public, better understand the medicinal value of marijuana. If marijuana is seen as a medical treatment legalization of marijuana for treatment will likely be accepted by politicians, and the public in general (Rubens, M. p.
