One of the most popular drugs in the world is Marijuana. But how did it become illegal. Well, Harry J. Anslinger, commissioner of the Federal Bureau of Narcotics funding was cut, and he needed a new drug to demonize. So, back then people were afraid of Mexicans, so he told everyone that marijuana makes Mexicans aggressive. And after that, the government passed a law that if you get caught smoking marijuana, you could be put in jail 2 to 10 years. And the weird thing is the government knew that marijuana wasn’t connected to violence, but Richard Nixon started the War on Drugs. And John Ehrlichman, President Nixon's assistant even said “We knew we couldn't make it illegal to be either against the war or black, but by getting the public to associate the hippies with marijuana and blacks with heroin. Legal marijuana is regulated for consumer safety. People buying marijuana on the street have no way of knowing if what they're ingesting is laced with a harder drug or not. Once marijuana is legalized, the government is able to enforce laboratory testing and make sure that marijuana is free of poison. For example, Washington law requires health warnings, quality assurance, labeling for the concentration of THC, and other important regulations for consumers. Also, Legalization of marijuana is taking out black markets and taking money away from drug business, and gangs. So since we know all of the benefits of marijuana, why is it not legal in all 50 states. Why can’t all the pros I listed come true in all the states.
