Marijuana, formerly known as Cannabis, has been looked at in a medical sense for centuries. Marijuana was seen as a household drug throughout the seventeenth to the early twentieth century as a remedy to reduce nausea or vomiting, headaches, an anti-inflammatory, and the choice of pain reliever. In the 1920s, the Eighteenth Amendment of the U.S. Constitution outlawed the manufacture and sale of alcohol, also known as Prohibition. As a result, marijuana flourished as a psychoactive drug. Marijuana, morphine, heroin, and cocaine continued to be used when the Prohibition was over in 1933. People believe that if marijuana is legalized users will get addicted. Marijuana use disorder become what is known as addiction when “the person cannot stop using the drug even though it interferes with many aspects of his or her life” (“Is Marijuana Addictive”). Although addiction is a problem, out of all the people who use marijuana, only 9% become dependent on it (“Is Marijuana Addictive”). Also, opioids and painkillers are very addictive as well, and they can lead to an overdose resulting in death. The second concern is abuse. States are worried that people who get the medical marijuana card will abuse it and get more than needed or sell it for money. While people may abuse their card just to get high or make money, there is a limit on how much a person with the card. The limit depends on the state and it only exceeded if the doctor recommends it and the state approves it. There are also laws one when and where the marijuana can be in possession. Although these problems have serious concerns, people are making a bigger deal out of them than is
