Marijuana, also known as cannabis, has been grown around the world for many centuries. The earliest reported discovery of a marijuana plant was in Asia, but it was not used for recreational smoking; it was used as a medicine and to make different items. The plant was used to make clothing, rope, and people even ate the seeds. Later, it spread across the world. Recreational marijuana did not become popular in the United States until the 1900’s and was not viewed as dangerous until Prohibition hit; then it was outlawed because people thought that it caused those who smoked to do unspeakable activities as what was seen with alcohol. New jobs would emerge because someone would have to be employed to run the dispensaries and more people who grow more plants. As the demand for marijuana increases, the more jobs would be created to fulfill the demands. As of right now, the country’s unemployment rate is around 4.5 percent which is lower than it has been in previous years, but if there was a way for the rate to decrease even more why not take that opportunity (Labor Force, 2017)? Since Colorado’s government legalized marijuana their unemployment rate is the lowest in the country at 2.3 percent with over 10,000 people finding jobs which dealt with the marijuana industry in some way (Gillies, 2017). According to Colorado’s governor, they have not seen a big spike in consumption since they have enforced regulations on marijuana and that they took in $200 million in tax revenues in the last year (Gillies, 2017). If lawmakers seized this opportunity like Colorado did, it would help thousands of people around the United States get much-needed jobs that were not available leading to fewer people needing aid from the government.
