We know it as pot, weed, grass, bud, Mary Jane, reefer, chronic, herb, dope, and ganja, yet millions of others in over half of the United States can call it medicine. Marijuana is a safe alternative to opiates. It helps in pain relief, and creates a massive revenue. Both medical and recreational marijuana should be legal in the U.S. because it has been proven to be beneficial in many patients, it is a multibillion dollar business, and there is no reason for it to be criminalized.
Marijuana has been proven to aid patients in pain relief, relief from anxiety and depression, poor appetite/weight loss, seizure disorders, Crohn’s disease, symptoms of HIV, nerve pain, tremors from Parkinson’s disease, nausea from cancer treatments (chemotherapy), muscle spasms from MS, and many other ailments. California is planning increase the tax to 45% in some areas, causing the total price to increase by 70%. The marijuana industry has grown extensively since Colorado and Washington first legalized it in 2012. In January of this year alone, Colorado has made $21,681,438. The growth of this industry even surpasses that of the dot-com era. During the dot com era, GDP increased at 22%. However, even with the marijuana industry being in it’s early stages, it reached 30% sales growth amounting to a total of $6.7 in a market that is still expanding.
One may argue that the growth of this industry will soon cease. However, the marijuana industry is projected to have a compound annual growth rate of 25% by 2021, amounting to a total of $20.2 billion. The facts are these: the marijuana industry is one of the most profitable in history, both for the government and dispensary owners. The only thing that could possibly stop the fast-track to legalization is how the federal government chooses to handle the state’s right to legalize, as cannabis is still DEA classified as a schedule 1
