The debate over marijuana has been going on for decades since it was first outlawed by the United States. There have been studies that have argued both for and against it. Until recently however, governments across the world have mostly been anti-marijuana. The recent debate has caused governments to rethink and reanalyze past judgements with the new information research has found. This debate hasn’t become as politicized in the U.S. as one might expect. Neither major party really supports the legalization of marijuana, however the entire Republican Party won’t ever support it whereas some members of the Democratic Party, including Bernie Sanders, do support it. Media is starting to put their input in on the issue with both the main news networks and smaller journalists and television shows weighing in. The public is starting to take sides as well with the older generations being more negative and the younger generations being more supportive. Legalization has never had a higher percentage of public support than right now. Within the United States, specific states are starting to take matters into their own hands and are voting state by state on the issue. There are three main levels right now in the U.S.; recreational use of marijuana being legal, medical marijuana being legal, and no marijuana being legal. Each year more and more states are voting on the issue, and each year more and more states vote to make it legal in some form or another. Other countries are starting to begin their own debate on the issue with countries like Canada putting in place a plan to make recreational use legal.
