After recreational marijuana is legalized, more teenagers will begin using the drug. It will become normalized and easier for them to access, especially at home. Because the Cannabis Act will allow adults to smoke marijuana and even grow their own plants at home (“No Shortage,” 2018), many teens will decide to try marijuana for themselves. In addition, society could pressure them into using the drug, because it will be acceptable to use, like alcohol. For example, Colorado has seen a seventy-four percent increase in marijuana users since it legalized the drug in 2012 (Hunt, 2017). Because alcohol dilates capillaries, it allows more THC to be absorbed into the body. Similarly, high THC levels allow more alcohol to be absorbed by slowing bodily functions like vomiting. While smoking marijuana poses no threat by itself, it can cause fatal alcohol poisoning because the toxin cannot be removed from the body (Enos, 2016). As a result, the higher BAC and THC levels cause drivers to be even more impaired on Canadian roads. Since there currently is no way to accurately, safely, and easily test drivers for marijuana impairment, more drivers will avoid being charged, causing more automotive accidents, injuries, and fatalities. Also, alcohol and marijuana mixing is extremely dangerous, and will become more common at household parties once the drug is legalized. This will increase the number of tragic youth deaths annually. A common counter-argument employed by the federal government is legalization will protect Canadians from additives found in illegally sourced marijuana by offering a legal way to purchase it in a regulated setting.
