Megan was 10 when she realised she was different to the 26 girls in her class. Verbally she had the words to express what her feelings were, but what she had to say made her nauseous especially with the thought of being unaccepted not only by society, but by her friends and most important her family. Having heard the words lesbian and gay, and also knowing the meaning of both, that feeling of nausea lasted for another eight years when Megan felt the time was right to come as gay.

A study conducted in 2009, on behalf of supporting Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender Lives, found that 18 per cent of LGBT people had attempted suicide. It also found that 20 per cent missed school because they were threatened or felt unsafe and that 27 per cent had self-harmed.

With the topic of marriage equality on the agenda of most Governments worldwide, today in Ireland people 's views towards the Lesbian Gay Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) community are gradually becoming more and more liberal. May 2015 will see a national referendum being held, for the Irish public to vote on whether or not to allow same-sex couples equal rights to marry.

The meaning of marriage in the Oxford English Dictionary is, “the legally or formally recognised union of a man and a woman (or, in some jurisdictions, two people of the same sex) as partners in a relationship”. But in the modern world that we live in, its for two people who love each other regardless of their sex, who want to create a future, family
