Measles have been a part of our global society since the 9th century and continues to kill an estimated amount of 145,000 people each year. What exactly is measles you are probably thinking? Measles is an infectious viral disease causing fever and a red rash on the skin, typically occurring in childhood. According to the WHO (World Health Organization) “measles is one of the leading causes of death among young children even though a safe and cost effective vaccine is available”. What really struck me about the previous statement and is the reason I selected this topic was that measles is one of the leading causes of death but we have a cost-effective vaccine available. Which begs the question, why is measles still one of the leading cause of death among children? The first assumption would be the vaccine MMR (Measles, Mumps, and Rubella) is not effective. Bill Gates actually stated “Measles will always show you if someone isn’t doing a good job on vaccinations. Kids will start dying of measles”. That’s not the case because statistics by the CDC …show more content…
I believe that I have three solutions that if implemented could put measles under the extinct category. I would start by proposing a nonnegotiable treaty for all nations to make the measles vaccine free to everybody. Also, nations with a surplus of the vaccine must help supply regions with shortages of the MMR vaccine. The main regions I would be targeting specifically would be Europe, Africa, the Pacific, and Asia because of the high number of measles cases recorded by the CDC. Out of those nations it will go by priority status starting with the highest number of cases, which is Asia. With the cost being nothing and the accessibility of the vaccine, we will start to see a reduction in cases as the years go on. After conquering Asia’s measles epidemic, tackling Europe and Africa shouldn't be a
