Today, media controls and determines societies as well as the people in them. Media is a quickly growing instrument in the creation of new innovations, simpler communication, and extending personal knowledge. The increase of personal knowledge that results from most types of media is acknowledged and encouraged, but does this newfound knowledge come from credible sources, or from companies who only wish to benefit themselves? From romantic, dramatic, and horror movies to news on the country’s national affairs, the stories and plotlines of the media cannot be classified as one single opinion. The public media is full of diverse and varied opinions, so the question comes down to the value of each of those opinions and whether or not they should be listened to and respected. Various types of media distort people's views of themselves as well as their perception of reality, especially when it comes to major societal or global issues. During the 2016 presidential election there was a massive controversy over the results that made Donald Trump the new President of the United States. The President made some extreme remarks that suggest racism, sexism, and discrimination during his campaign. Almost every news station broadcasted these statements and made them known to the public. Without the media stepping in in instances like these, citizens would not be given the opportunity to vote and make decisions based on full information. What makes a democracy is that every person has the right to obtain all information and aide in decision making to benefit the country.
