Conformism

Conformity is a legitimate concern in today’s capitalist consumerism society. Many strive for non-conformity and claim they have achieved it. Bolstered by adds for camping gear and “unique” mass produced clothing, these nonconformists praise themselves and others who follow them. Though all these others soon become the same nonconformists themselves, the unorthodox of the day has a brief moment of “uniqueness” before becoming orthodox once more. The benefits of conformity are inherent in the decision making process it doesn’t require. Conformism can even be found in venues where passions run hot, dictating bold new ways to behave in roughly the same fashion.

By behaving in these similar fashions, people become conformists. Opposing them the self proclaimed non-conformists laud themselves for their nonconformity, reveling in their processes for “getting back to their roots“ or “away from it all.” They then confer with their fellow nonconformists on the best ways to do so and quickly alter their lifestyle to match their friends original take. By doing this, nonconformism quickly falls apart and joins the masses as another flavor of conformism. Being social creatures that rely on company, humans can’t possibly achieve non-conformism. …show more content…

Milling through its lives, this mob crawls towards some fuzzy idea of a utopian society and heeds little the notions of speeding up the process or accounts that the mob clearly isn’t moving in the right direction.
