Being part of a world that always leans towards the latest hot new trend or what seems to be popular in the moment, it can be hard to express one’s own individuality. Being “average” is something that no one aspires to be, but it is hard to advance when everyone is headed in the same direction. Being a non-conformist in a much so conformist world is rare but certainly not impossible. We tend to look up to those non-conformists as role models and are amazed by their courage to stand out and be different. On September 6 1997, over one million mourners from all around the world lined the streets of Diana’s 3-mile funeral route to pay and show respects to her influential life. Along with the people of London, celebrities, fashion designers, political leaders and musicians also attended the memorial service. Over 2.5 billion tuned into their televisions, making it the most watched event in history (Brown). Elton John’s performance of “Candle in the Wind” at her funeral quickly became the largest and best selling single of all time with over 3.5 million copies in the first week of release (Brown). The beloved Diana continues to live on not only in her family but the rest of the world as well. Shortly after her death in December 1997, nations signed the Ottawa Treaty that put a ban on the use of anti-personnel landmines. Charities for those affected by landmines and AIDS patients today still continue to thrive in her name. The Diana, Princess of Wales Memorial Fund, which legacy is “The Work Continues” provided other donations to organizations and charities that Diana was involved in before her death.
