Ignorance In Self-Reliance, By Ralph Emerson

In “Self-Reliance,” by Ralph Emerson, Ralph stated that “envy is ignorance” and that “imitation is suicide.” What Emerson is saying by “envy is ignorance” and “imitation is suicide” is that between humans, the only thing we do is compare ourselves to others, in any and all matters. We compare ourselves to: who has the highest grade, who is richer, who has the better status, who has the most power, who has the best family background, who is the smartest, or who is the strongest. Due to these comparison, people convey what they do not have, and, what they do have, they will fail to realize it was there, hence the ignorance part. People have to be themselves and should not wish to be like other people because you must create your own path to succeed. To conform is to obey the rules, guidelines, or opinion of another person or a group due to their influence and pressure. On a daily base, we have conformed to what society demands of us. We conform by following the rules set by people we are not familiar with, by obeying our higher ups, by imitating what society expect us to be. But the sad thing is, we are essentially forced to conform. If we try to rebel against it there’s always a type of consequence or punishment. For example by breaking the rules set by people we are not familiar with, the backlash would be proven guilty and paying a fine or spending time a jail. Another example is that by disobeying what our higher ups commanded, there would be the consequence of that higher up harming you with his influence like let's just say firing you. The last example if that by disregarding what society expect us to be, we would be bound down by society itself. Society will look down on us and will question us just because we won't conform to what society expect us
