A Nuclear power plant is a power station where the heat produced by nuclear reactors is used to produce electricity. Nuclear power, unfortunately, is not considered as renewable energy even though it is clean energy. There are two types of reactors, which are fission and fusion. Fission is simply when a heavy atom separates into two lighter atoms. Fusion, on the other hand, is a combination of two lighter atoms. Currently, fission is widely used reactor around the world and used the chemical element uranium as a fuel. Fusion has not been actually used as a reactor to produce electricity yet because the technology to control it is unknown. Public opinion has changed after this horrible disaster form for nuclear power to against it. Therefore, many challenges occur in the field of nuclear power plants.
What happen exactly in Fukushima Daiichi was not expected. First, a huge earthquake with a magnitude of 9 hit the northeastern part of Japan. There were three reactors operating soon after the earthquake these three were successfully shut down. Secondly, tsunami hit the plant and the electricity went out along with emergency power supply. As a result, the cooling system fell to cool the reactors within the few days. Failing to cool these reactors led overheat and caused a meltdown along with releasing a radiations.
There are many massive losses of Fukushima accident that comprehend several aspects such as environmental, economical, and people’s health. In terms of economic, both Toyo Electric Power Company and Japanese government faced tremendous costs in constructions and meeting individuals’ needs.
