Pearl Harbor: A job loss is someone else’s gain Pearl Harbor is an important monument on Oahu, Hawai’i. It has been on the island since 1911. Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard is responsible for taking care of the ships and submarines that are stationed there. The Shipyard’s mission is to keep the ships and submarines fit and ready to fight. In the past couple of years, the Naval Shipyard has been looking to hire more workers. A lot of people on the island need better paying jobs, especially since the economy is becoming bad. The Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard is losing workers due to early-age retirement, and while anyone is allowed to apply for the Pearl Harbor Apprenticeship, only 100-150 people each year will get hired. It all started in the year of 1908, when the congress gave consent to workers to construct the Pearl Harbor Naval Base. Years later during February 1941, President Franklin D. Applicants want to apply for the Pearl Harbor apprenticeship because they need better paying jobs. Hoover discusses how much a worker makes which is “Starting pay is about $20 an hour. That increases to just under $30 an hour for apprentice graduates” (Hoover Para 4). The amount of money a worker makes is more than the minimum wage provided in Hawai’i. How much money is that total in a year? According to a Shipyard apprentice program administrator named Steven Watanabe, “the shipyard expects to fill 75 engineering positions with pay ranging from $45,000 to $68,000 a year, depending on the applicant’s qualifications” (Hoover Para 5). That amount of money will make more people wanting to apply for the apprenticeship. Applying is just the beginning of the journey to getting the job. The next step is waiting to see if you were selected to be a trainee for the
