As of April 1, 2016, California, Vermont, Oregon, Washington, and Montana are the only states in the U.S. to allow physician assisted suicide. Physician assisted suicide means that ones primary doctor facilitates and enables the process of death by either- providing lethal medicine, or information to patient knowing their plan is to end their own life. Today many Americans have become more open minded to a wide variety of opinions and beliefs. Although some might believe that this is a matter of rights, the truth is that it is only a matter of saving a life. Physician assisted suicide endangers the vulnerable, undermines the quality of palliative care given to patients, and betrays human dignity and equality before the law.
First of all, physician assisted suicide threatens the life’s of people under abnormal situations. According to Dr. Anderson, “where it has been allowed, safeguards purporting to minimize this risk have proved to be inadequate and have been often watered down or eliminated over time”(“Always Care, Never Kill”). Our legal system should treat everyone with upmost dignity and respect. Just because somebody is suffering or has abnormal qualities does not mean that they don’t deserve life as every “normal” person. Classifying a group of people as being eligible for assisted suicide puts them under inequality. The author in “Always Care, Never Kill” claims that, “No natural right to PAS exists, and arguments for such a right are incoherent: A legal system that allows assisted suicide abandons the natural right to life of all its citizens”(Anderson).
