Prayer in Schools
We live in a time when there are controversial about just about any topic. However, there have been heated debates over the last fifty years concerning whether or not to have prayer in schools. Both sides have been persistent in what they believe and have shown what side they are on by continuing to bring lawsuits against the other side. In Mississippi, which is a part of the Bible Belt South, many students have been taught from birth, at home, to pray before any major undertaking. They were taught to pray before eating, going to bed, when they have a problem, when they are going to take a test, and before sporting events. Therefore, many students want the opportunity to freely pray at school. They see praying as one of the most precious civil liberties they can have in America. There are those today that believe the only way to curve violence in schools, bullying, and harassment is through prayer. While the majority of parents and students favor praying in schools, there is a small minority that believes their rights are violated if prayer is allowed in schools. Many who oppose praying feel out of place, they are ashamed or this is not the training they received from home or/and church. Since there are many denominations in the United States and even they cannot agree on an appropriate prayer that will be include certain groups and exclude others. Since Christians are not in agreement as to what is appropriate, they have let their differences shut down praying in schools altogether. There are others who profess to be atheists and do not believe in God. Therefore, they do not see the need for praying in schools.
