Euthanasia/ Assisted Suicide
In America, more than one million people are diagnosed with cancer every year, and over 500,000 die from it yearly. Not only that, but many people suffer from other painful terminal illnesses, including heart disease and Lesch-Nyhan Syndrome. People with deadly illnesses that are constantly experiencing pain deserve to have the option of Euthanasia. Legalizing assisted suicide gives patients a choice for a quick and peaceful death, which would also give them more control in their lives. Euthanasia can also save the medical industry more money every year. This is why we need to legalize physician assisted suicide in all 50 states. Terminal illnesses are incurable diseases with side effects that diminish and add disabilities to the way people live their lives. The Lesch-Nyhan Syndrome, for example, has side effects of involuntary muscle movements, neurological impairment, impaired kidney function, and more. People who live with these diseases are either constantly living in pain, and or fear what will happen to them in the future. This is why many people choose assisted suicide as an option, and need it available in all states. Euthanasia lets suffering patients have a quick, easy death. By legalizing assisted suicide in all 50 states, we could save money that would’ve gone forth to terminally ill patients if they requested Euthanasia. Overall, the medical industry could reasonably save 627 million dollars (in 1995 currency) according to Ezekiel J. Emanuel, M.D., Ph.D., and Margaret P. Battin, Ph.D. Legalizing Euthanasia could save America’s medical industry approximately one billion dollars every year.
