“Gulp Gulp Gulp” Do you have a sweet tooth? Do you like to drink beverages loaded with sugar? Well then, there may be so unpleasant news. San Francisco’s Proposition E and Berkeley’s Measure D wants to eliminate soda pop once and for all. The two cities have proposed to increase the prices of sugary beverages by $0.01 to $0.02 an ounce. All drinks that are sweetened with sugar with some exceptions are subjected to the price increase. As a child I myself loved sugar sweetened drinks such as soda and fruit juices. For the 18 years of my life, I never had to experience any tax increase on the sugar sweetened drinks or the unhealthy food that I consume. Like people say that soda pop leads to childhood obesity, soda pop is also part of a child’s childhood. I remember that as a kid whenever I saw a can of soda, I would become very ecstatic and eager to gulp the whole can down. Thinking back to the old days, for some children, being able to consume soda was a reward. Not all children that drank soda back then are obese now. A person just needs to drink responsibly and be responsible for their own health. What we choose to eat and drink is a bit too personal for the government to have comments in. Some may say that the tax would not only raise millions but it would also discourage soda drinking to cut down on childhood obesity. This is a step to prevent childhood obesity as well as other health concerns. Why should only sugar sweetened drinks such as soda, fruit drinks, and other varieties of soft drinks that have no nutritional value be taxed and not coffee or ice tea.
