Dress Codes: Should They be Implemented at my School?
Dress codes have been around since the beginning of public schools in the 16th century. An ongoing debate has been occurring as to whether dress codes should be enforced in schools or are unnecessary and should not be implemented. One side states that dress codes create equality and reduced stress in a school setting, while on the other hand, some may argue that dress codes create a sense of individuality and community within schools. My school currently does not have a dress code but should change to imposing a dress code because there are fewer financial burdens on students and families and creates a sense of school pride and community.

School pride is very important at my school, so having a uniform allows students to really represent their school and have the student body know they are a part of something. Source F states, “Wearing a uniform is a badge of pride, creates an identity for a school and is an important part of being a school student “Uniforms show that you are part of an organisation. Wearing it says we’re all in this together,” Jason Wing,” (Source F). This shows that when all students dress the same, they know they are representing their school and themselves as a student while having a sense of comfort because everyone is dressed the same. My school and along with many other schools struggle with the problem of school pride and getting students involved. Enabling dress codes and uniforms in my school can be an immediate solution to help that. On the other hand, some students and teachers may argue and say that not having uniforms and letting students dress as they choose creates individuality. Source B claims “Fashion is one way that students express themselves, and that may be an important part of the school experience. When students can’t show their individuality, they may not feel like they belong as much,” (Source B).
