Are my shoulders distracting you from a proper education? They definitely did not distract my mother from letting me walk out of the house this way. Schools should have some type of dress code to ensure students are at least wearing clothes to school, but they should not be effecting classes every day. Every couple weeks or so there is almost always something in the news or on social media of a female student’s wardrobe being over sexualised, their education being disrupted or taken from them, and their confidence being robbed. Most school dress codes begin with the universal fingertip length shorts. Not only is this an absurd rule for girls with very long arms, like me, it is even more absurd that I am denied the right to wear shorts that keep me cool during the hot school days because school officials have over sexualized a piece of clothing. If they aren't sent to the office usually, depending upon the teacher, they will be made an example of in front of the entire class. Both of these occasions take valuable time away from a student’s education. At the most the lecture in class can last around 30 minutes or less. While in the office you may be sitting around waiting for a couple hours for your parents to be able to leave work and bring you clothes. You can even be sent home for the entire day. A situation like this happened at Canton High School. Over 100 students were suspended on the first day of school for wearing neon colored shoes or neon shoe strings because they were supposedly "gang related". There was also a girl last October that was taken out of class just because she had a necklace on that resembled a rosary.The principle took it as gang related also and reprimanded her for it (Kuczynski-Brown).
