“Overall, 57% of teenagers are worried about a shooting at their school” (Nather). This is one of the many statistics being discovered following the most recent of a long line of school shootings. These school shootings are a serious concern and are becoming more common each year. This is a terrible trend, with four hundred and seventy-four school shootings in American history, starting in 1764. That being said, the majority have come in recent years, with 16 already this year, resulting in 28 dead and 50 injured (Nather). This is why something must change, and one solution is to allow schools to defend themselves. In order for schools to be able to defend themselves, teachers should have the ability to carry weapons within their schools; it is their right, their duty, and is the most effective solution.

With the number and lethality of school shootings increasing yearly, it is a serious concern for the 3.2 million public school teachers, 51.2 million public school students, and all their parents. Arming the teachers gives both the teachers and students a better chance of survival and a sense of safety. The current school protocol for dealing with an intruder is to barricade inside of a classroom and to attack the intruder with whatever is attainable if the intruder breaks in. But arming teachers would mean that the intruder could rarely ever get completely into the classroom, let alone hurt any students. While stopping all violent acts is impossible, an armed teacher could have saved many lives in the past shootings, and many lives in the inevitable future incidents. This is why there needs to be a change, and arming our teachers is the most logical
