Since the Parkland shooting, President Donald Trump has advocated arming teachers as a solution for school shootings. During a meeting with students and teachers from the Parkland shooting, Trump said, “If you had a teacher who was adept at firearms, they could very well end the attack very quickly” (Smith). While some support arming our educators, others are unsure. Some fear arming teachers could result in more casualties and overall fearful students. I believe that arming teachers is dangerous and an irresponsible waste of valuable funds.

How are we protecting students by bringing guns into schools? Classrooms can become chaotic resulting in many frustrated teachers. At one time or another most have witnessed an educator lose their cool. What if that educator had access to a weapon? Even when the classroom is calm accidents could still happen. Just recently CNN reported that a California teacher accidentally fired a gun during a gun safety lesson injuring a student (Chavez.) Though in California it’s illegal to have guns in schools there are exceptions for peace officers or others with special permission.
