Stem Cell Therapy to Treat Genetic Disease
Wouldn’t it be amazing if a cell had the ability to continuously divide and had the potential to eventually develop into all other cells from the human body? What about if those cells could replace diseased or dysfunctional cells with healthy, functioning ones? Well, a certain type of cell can do all of those things. This cell is called a stem cell. Stem cells are unique and have the ability to do quite the extraordinary. There are different kinds of stem cells with different abilities. Stem cells can treat genetic diseases and other illnesses. This all sounds great, right? Except, there are bioethical concerns about stem cells and where they are derived from. Many people favor stem cells, while many people are also against using stem cells. The main question that arises is, is using stem cell therapy to treat genetic diseases ethically and morally wrong or right?

Stem cell therapy is an excellent opportunity to explore what diseases we can cure. Untreatable diseases are now treatable with this therapy. Stem cell therapy has the ability to not only treat genetic diseases but has the possibility to treat beyond that. This gives everyone with a genetic disease, a chance to cure it and live a healthy life. You can obtain stem cells from different places and not just from the embryo. There are also methods and ways that do not harm the human embryo. Many embryo’s result in miscarriage early on or many embryos are not wanted. If someone gives permission or is having an abortion then who decides that it is immoral to use these unwanted embryos for stem cell research? Treating a genetic disease seems quite impossible since it is genetically inherited but stem cell therapy opens up the opportunity to do the thing that was once
