Millions watch in horror as the lives of friends, family, and neighbors die suddenly. America and other allied countries see and hear about these deaths every day. Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) is a current terrorist group killing off thousands of people around the world. The current debate in America and around the world is where the Syrians that are stuck in the crossfire of ISIS will seek refuge. Allowing Syrian refugees into the United States can risk the safety of millions of people. First of all in the United States, twenty-six of the fifty states is now against allowing Syrian refuges into our country. However, only thirteen of the Unites States, consisting of mainly Northern states, is willing to accept them. One major reason that many Americans are now fearful of the refugees seeking safety within their states is because of the recent terrorist attacks in Paris. The attacks was caused by ISIS who managed to kill over 132 people and caused panic within many Americans. The U.S. is and has always been based on freedom and safety. After all, the first pilgrims came to America to start fresh and seek safety, just as the Syrian exiles. The large debate now is between allowing the Syrians to seek refuge in America and risk the citizens’ safety or secure the country first and find other alternatives for the refugees. Governor Jerry Brown stated his opinion on the matter by stating, “You can be sure that we will do everything in our power to protect the people of the state.”(Article 2). Not only Governor Brown was stating this, but governors of other states are supporting the same opinion in protecting the people first.
