Space Exploration “Space, the final frontier” (Roddenberry). The date was October 4th, 1957; the Soviet Union launched the first satellite into space, Sputnik I. Sputnik I’s launch ignited a great competition between the Soviet Union and the United States called the Space Race. As the Cold War was in full force, both the United States and the Soviet Union were trying to prove who had greater technology. The Soviets decided to prove they were stronger and more advanced by launching a man-made satellite into space, something that had never been done before. They continued to show their strength with many more launches over the course of a few years. This included sending the first man into space. Some could say that spending that amount of money on something that could go wrong at any moment is a poor use of funds, just like the Challenger space shuttle explosion that occurred on January 28th, 1986, killing seven crew members. This is the main argument of many who do not agree with space exploration, and it might be the only one required to fight against the daring venture. The issue at hand is whether or not valued time and resources should be used to explore the depths of space, or if those resources would be better used for our planet and the people who live here. This is a problem that people should care about since either way, a large amount of money will be spent, problems will be solved, and even technological advancements could be made. All of these things are for the betterment of mankind. It just depends on whether someone looks up or down. CONGRESS In regard to the importance of space exploration previously stated and proved by historical evidence, Congress has passed legislation in regard to the expansion and creation of space exploration programs such as NASA and space exploration
