In society today, the police are viewed as the protectors from the evils that currently exist in the world. However, within the past year there have been countless unjustified killings of unarmed African American people. This week another unarmed African American man was unjustly killed by a police officer in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Sadly, a very high percentage of the officers that unjustly kill African Americans are sentenced to extremely short prison sentences or receive no sentence what so ever. If the American people continue to support these killings and prison sentences the death toll will continue to increase exponentially. I beliveve that this is done simply because officers face danger in their every day lives and may kill someone out of fear of losing their own life, but just because they are afraid of dying does not make it okay to murder an unarmed human being. In the article written by Manny Fernandez, Manslaughter Charge for Tulsa Officer Who Killed Black Driver Fernandez reports on the sentences that prosecuters are trying to charge officer Betty Jo Shelby with. The charge that prosecutors are trying to convict Shelby with is “committing manslaughter ‘in the heat of passion.’” (Fernandez) If convicted of manslaughter, (which will probably not happen) Shelby will be facing up to four years in prison. Officer Shelby unjustly murdered an unarmed human being with her firearm and will not be tried as a murderer. Facing a maximum prison sentence of four years for murdering an unarmed person is absolutely ubsurd! This woman murdered someone and should be tried in court as a murderer. Sadly, it is highly unlikely that officer Shelby will ever see the inside of tiny jail cell simply due to her occupation. It is reported that approximately 97% of officers tried for similar offences are not convicted. Some people believe that due to her occupation and constant exposure to danger that officer Shelby should receive a shorter sentence. I disagree with that belief because I
