White Working Class and 2016 Election On Tuesday, November 8, 2016, republican candidate Donald Trump beat democratic candidate Hillary Clinton by a landslide victory. This triumph for the Republican party was completely unforeseen and shocked the American public. Although the question of “How in the world did Trump win?” was one that puzzled many, it wasn’t the one the majority of America wanted answered immediately. On the contrary, the question that most people demanded the answer to was “Who or what is to blame for this?” Well, it just so happens that not long after the election, media sources announced that exit polls identified the driving factor behind Trump’s victory to be non other than: white working class voters. Trump knew beforehand the economic and social fears of the white working class and used them to his advantage. For example, for decades, the white working class has been devastated by the swiftly globalizing economy.(Tankersley, J.) With more and more jobs relocating to different areas and the demand for degree-holding workers increased, most working class whites started to feel alienated and looked down upon by modern society. Trump was well aware of this concern and promised a restoration of the old industrial economy through: renegotiated trade deals and tariffs on imports; by pledging to deport immigrants, deregulation and more drilling. Proposals such as this began showing the white working class that their was finally a candidate that they could identify with. That there was now a possibility of someone who could addressed all of their issues that they’ve kept under wraps for so
