The death penalty has been a controversial issue in the United States for many years. There are many people that support both sides of the issue and there are many facts to support both. The death penalty is the legal process of executing a convicted person as punishment for capital offenses. Capital punishment can also be applied for treason, espionage, and other crimes. Currently, thirty-two states support the death penalty and eighteen states have abolished it.

For example, electrocution, gas chamber, hanging, fire squad, lethal injection. Some say that some of these methods may result in more pain and consider them as cruel and unusual punishment. Over the years, our country has used more humane methods of carrying out the death penalty, such as lethal injection, which is quicker and less painful than other methods.
The deterrence of the issue is a very important one. The death penalty serves as a method for preventing capital crimes. For many years, some means of punishment has been used to discourage people from committing major crimes. Having this as the strongest punishment available will make potential murders think twice about committing a serious crime knowing that they may lose their own life. Being sentenced to life in prison isn’t as effective in preventing serious crimes. Studies have shown that states that use the death penalty have kept their murder rates lower because of it.
The issue of retribution is not another word for revenge. When a murderer takes someone’s life, they are taking that person’s life for selfish reasons. The death penalty is the proper punishment for protecting the people of this country by making the murderer pay the price for the harm he has caused. That harm not only affects the person that was murdered but also his family and
