In 2015, 18,000 people were sentenced to state prison for murder, but only 10 received the death penalty. The Death Penalty is a form of punishment that gives solace to the victimized families, and it lowers the crime rate. The Death Penalty is an effective way to bring justice to mass murderers. When someone commits a heinous crime, they should be sentenced to death. Not all criminals should be sentenced to death but only the diabolical killers. There are many reasons for the use of the death penalty. First, the death penalty eliminates any chance for the criminal to hurt anyone else. This will stop murders before they even happen. Many murders happen in the prisons, and there is no effective way to punish them. There is only so many life sentences a person can have. We need to protect the victim and not the criminal (Jones). There are many different types of victims. They can be ordinary people or other inmates serving time. In 2008, 13 people were murdered in prison ("Federal Prisons"), and the only way to punish them, if they already have a life sentence, is to put them in solitary confinement. Solitary confinement is three times as expensive as regular prison unit (Johnson). This shows that solitary confinement is an expensive form of punishment, and the death penalty would lower the amount of people in it.
