Death Penalty

More than half of all the states had at least one death row exoneration. But, death sentences have declined by 75% since their peak in the mid-1990s. From 1973-1999, there was an average of 3 exonerations per year. From 2000-2011, there was an average of 5 exonerations per year. The death penalty should be abolished, because killers can change, it's not always the best option, and it's inhumane.

Killers are one of the scariest people a person will come across. They hide in plain sight and feel no remorse most of the time. However, they are people, and these inhabitants can change. Some people who were put to death were falsely accused for someone else's crime. If they wouldn’t have been killed we could have known that it wasn’t them who did the crime, but since they died, there is no way to justify this. There was no way of apologizing to the deceased family's for a wrong doing. The death penalty also gives some of the worst offenders publicity that they do not deserve or need. They get to speak about their beliefs, religion, and their crimes. Why couldn't someone of more importance speak to the public instead of a random murderer? Mary Meehan from The National Catholic Review said "Gary Gilmore and Steven Judy received reams of publicity as they neared their dates with the grim reaper. They had a chance to expound before a national audience their ideas about crime and punishment, God and country, and anything else that happened to cross their minds. It is hard to imagine two men less deserving of a wide audience." Death is quick, people who actually did do terrible things don’t suffer for what they did. Instead, they die, they're life is ended in an instant. They don’t pay for the acts they did. The criminals family's are stuck with the pain and sorrow. The family's are left paying for what they did, when it should be the other way
