Nelson Mandela once said “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.”(“Resources for Speakers, Global Issues”). I strongly support civil rights and unequal educational opportunities is an ubiquitous concern in the United States. Today, “Schools in the United States are more segregated today than they have been in more than four decades”(“Reviving the Goal of an Integrated Society”) sadly many people are not aware of this fact. The problem arrives when we see the disparity in the funding of white suburban schools and non-white urban schools. Studies show schools with high levels of poverty have weaker staffs, fewer high quality textbooks, health and nutrition problems, and many other conditions that strongly affect student performance levels. It will go like this; there are over a hundred thousand students in the Philadelphia school district who are not getting the educational opportunities that will help them succeed in life. Your donation will go towards improvements in reading materials, school artcutature, education quality, etc. But most importantly, Your donation will help future doctors, lawyers and teachers have equal opportunities for a quality education. This rhetoric will surely sway an audience to donate to a good cause. In the last several years, the school district of Philadelphia has experienced numerous budget crises. Last year,thirty-one schools were shut down thousands of teachers, librarians, nurses and counselors were laid off(npr.org). I first-hand seen the effects of this depletion of funds in my high school. With 2,300+ students and only one nurse and two counselors, problems were definite. Lack of funds also led to students using books from the mid-80s in english class. Students can not get the best education possible in these conditions, so I feel I need to improve this substandard
