By allowing professional athletes to use drugs, what message are we sending out to young sports players and those who idolize their sporting heroes? Is the goal to inform them on how to cheat, or how to use your own muscle and blood to win? Performance-Enhancing drugs used by athletes can cause many health problems and create an unfair advantage to other athletes. Many of the performance enhancers used have serious health risk and allow the use of such substances could cause peer pressure to all athletes to consider using them. Athletes dreaming to improve their performance the easy way are often the first you see to start using substances; this places them at risk of the many consequences.

Professional athletes practice and workout every day to be in the best shape they can and to perfect their craft either on the field/court/arena/track. “Using PEDs is a shortcut in sports making body muscle grow faster while increasing body endurance” (Jost2). This trend in pro sports is increasing rather than decreasing. Ever since the official ban of steroids in the Olympics in 1976, the majority of professional sports commissions followed. Since the ban there have been over 500 busts in baseball, 480 in track in field, 200 in football, and over 150 in swimming, boxing, and soccer.
The Expansion of Georgia came with many conflicts such as the treaty of New York that was established in 1790 and caused the creeks to move west of the Okeene River. There was also the Yazoo land fraud that started in 1795 and caused Georgia to give up all of the land involved in the fraud to Georgia. Indian removal caused a decrease in population within Georgia but made Georgia to gain more land. Events that accrued during that time affected Georgia economy, social growth and population. Abraham Baldwin wrote the first charter for the University of Georgia.
Every couple of weeks or so, you hear stories of professional athletes having their sport taken away from them, because of the drive to be the biggest, strongest and best they could be. Due to this drive, they begin to use Performance Enhancing Drugs. PED’s are a danger to athletes and their health, and they should remain banned. Some of these dangers are cardiovascular difficulties, dangerous side effects, and illness in the liver. First off, the use of performance enhancing drugs can cause Cardiovascular difficulties.
The use of performance-enhancing drugs, or PED’s, in sports has been a significant cause of athlete ridicule over the past several years in the United States of America and throughout the world. PED’s are considered a banned substance in nearly every athletic competition that is regulated at the highest level. In America, the National Football League (NFL), National Basketball Association (NBA), and Major League Baseball (MLB) are the largest professional sports companies, all of which have PED’s as a banned substance. Further, the players face significant fines, suspensions, and other penalties if they abuse the respective PED policies for each league. In this paper I will discover the history of PED use in sports, the side effects and uses,
Dr. LIncoln Allison argues that in truth, steroids are not really “cheating”, they are just a way to bring out the full ability from a player. “A sportsman or woman who seeks an advantage from drugs just moves up to the level appropriate to his or her underlying ability”(107). She suggests that we deal with other, much greater problems, before worrying about teroid issue, ”In general, the risk to health from performance-enhancing drugs is considerably less than that from tobacco or alcohol, and we ought not to apply paternalistic moral assumptions to sport that we are not prepared to apply to the rest of
The article tries explain how an athlete can get PEDs for therapeutic use, it also explains the limitations of this process. It also tries to explain that the reasons that may sway athletes to take illegal PEDs are very complex, these factors range from peer pressure to misleading information on PEDs to many other factors. In addition, the article also examines the dangers of the use of PEDs from a health stand point and a professional stand point. This article I believe provides valuable information for my research as I am trying to formulate the many reasons why an athlete would use performance enhancing
For years, the use of performance-enhancing drugs has haunted all levels of sport, baseball taking the majority of the publicity. Many have lost sight of the fact that baseball players are not the only athletes that face this life threatening addiction. Due to the amount of padding they have to wear, football players can easily disguise their size therefore keeping them from receiving scrutiny from the public. This has allowed more and more players to look to PEDs in order to gain an edge over their opponents. The issue spans to not only the professional level, but the high school and collegiate divisions as well. Because the National Football League sits on a higher platform, they bring in an exceptional amount of money compared to that
There are many arguments supporting the ban of PEDs from professional sports. A science-based argument against the use of PEDs in sports includes the possible side effects that accompany PEDs. Using PEDs can be detrimental to ones health and each drug comes with different unwanted side effects. The side effects range from superficial problems to long-term high-risk medical problems. The side effects aren’t just physiological but psychological too.
Today, PEDs, Performance Enhancing Drugs, have become a major conflict in the world of sports. Hence its name, PEDs increase athlete’s performance and are currently illegal. The fact that they are against the law doesn’t stop over 20% of players to take them. The only way to level the playing field is to legalize PEDs. There are more options than doping that give athletes unfair edges in sports.
Besides the satisfaction of personal accomplishment, athletes often pursue dreams of winning a medal for their country or securing a spot on a professional team. In such an environment, the use of performance-enhancing drugs has become increasingly common.(www.mayoclinic.org/)
Taking pills and injecting testosterone are popular ways that athletes use PEDs. The whole reason that athletes choose to take these drugs is because of the unfair advantages they gain. Athletes take these drugs knowing it will increase their athletic ability and decrease their rest time. Anyone that knowingly takes a drug that will increase their ability is not playing their sport the acceptable way, and obviously this glorified cheating should not be allowed. Evan Argintar, an orthopedic surgeon at MedStar Washington Hospital Center, had this to say about performance enhancing drugs.
In conclusion, Performance Enhancing Drugs should not be tolerated in any sport, whether professional or amatuer. These drugs are highly dangerous and even lethal to all athletes who use them. It is also unfair to athletes who choose not to use these drugs, as they are performing on their hard work and talent and not relying on an “edge” to help them reach their goals. These drugs are highly addictive, just like any other street drug or alcohol and can be fatal in many cases.
