By allowing professional athletes to use drugs, what message are we sending out to young sports players and those who idolize their sporting heroes? Is the goal to inform them on how to cheat, or how to use your own muscle and blood to win? Performance-Enhancing drugs used by athletes can cause many health problems and create an unfair advantage to other athletes. Many of the performance enhancers used have serious health risk and allow the use of such substances could cause peer pressure to all athletes to consider using them. Athletes dreaming to improve their performance the easy way are often the first you see to start using substances; this places them at risk of the many consequences.
High school athletes will go digging for solutions to become bigger, faster, and stronger. “The values of competition, teamwork, dedication, and cooperation have been replaced by a new focus or value, simply to excel at the highest possible level” (Schwab n.p.). This introduces them to the option of using performance-enhancing drugs. Schwab states from his personal experience that “between 5 to 10 percent of athletes I have coached used steroids” (Schwab n.p.). High school athletes strive to play at the collegiate level, and some aspire beyond that to play at the professional level.
Professional athletes practice and workout every day to be in the best shape they can and to perfect their craft either on the field/court/arena/track. “Using PEDs is a shortcut in sports making body muscle grow faster while increasing body endurance” (Jost2). This trend in pro sports is increasing rather than decreasing. Ever since the official ban of steroids in the Olympics in 1976, the majority of professional sports commissions followed. Since the ban there have been over 500 busts in baseball, 480 in track in field, 200 in football, and over 150 in swimming, boxing, and soccer.
The Expansion of Georgia came with many conflicts such as the treaty of New York that was established in 1790 and caused the creeks to move west of the Okeene River. There was also the Yazoo land fraud that started in 1795 and caused Georgia to give up all of the land involved in the fraud to Georgia. Indian removal caused a decrease in population within Georgia but made Georgia to gain more land. Events that accrued during that time affected Georgia economy, social growth and population. Abraham Baldwin wrote the first charter for the University of Georgia.
Every couple of weeks or so, you hear stories of professional athletes having their sport taken away from them, because of the drive to be the biggest, strongest and best they could be. Due to this drive, they begin to use Performance Enhancing Drugs. PED’s are a danger to athletes and their health, and they should remain banned. Some of these dangers are cardiovascular difficulties, dangerous side effects, and illness in the liver. First off, the use of performance enhancing drugs can cause Cardiovascular difficulties.
The use of performance-enhancing drugs, or PED’s, in sports has been a significant cause of athlete ridicule over the past several years in the United States of America and throughout the world. PED’s are considered a banned substance in nearly every athletic competition that is regulated at the highest level. In America, the National Football League (NFL), National Basketball Association (NBA), and Major League Baseball (MLB) are the largest professional sports companies, all of which have PED’s as a banned substance. Further, the players face significant fines, suspensions, and other penalties if they abuse the respective PED policies for each league. In this paper I will discover the history of PED use in sports, the side effects and uses,
The article tries explain how an athlete can get PEDs for therapeutic use, it also explains the limitations of this process. It also tries to explain that the reasons that may sway athletes to take illegal PEDs are very complex, these factors range from peer pressure to misleading information on PEDs to many other factors. Dr. LIncoln Allison argues that in truth, steroids are not really “cheating”, they are just a way to bring out the full ability from a player. “A sportsman or woman who seeks an advantage from drugs just moves up to the level appropriate to his or her underlying ability”(107). She suggests that we deal with other, much greater problems, before worrying about teroid issue, ”In general, the risk to health from performance-enhancing drugs is considerably less than that from tobacco or alcohol, and we ought not to apply paternalistic moral assumptions to sport that we are not prepared to apply to the rest of
Any man is capable of anything he puts his mind to, the power of the mind is stronger than any medicine, steroid, or therapy. It is not said that no man can be trusted, but every man should in fact hold his own life. Putting a healthy life in the hands of another, even a doctor, can put that life at risk. Doctors cut the wrong vein, husbands beat their wives and friends turn into foes. No betrayal is lesser than the other no matter the outcome.
Every year the size of players ascends and these abusers continue to get away with little to no punishment. Highly sought after high school recruits turn to these to put on size before their first season of college football and collegiate players use them to prep for their possible future in the NFL. Due to the lack of testing, the upside for student-athletes to juice has almost become greater than the latter. Particularly in high school, the chance of a player actually getting busted does not deter them from cheating and trying to pack on excessive amounts of muscle. Every year parents lose kids that have thought they needed steroids to get bigger or improve their image.
Introduction: One of the largest industries in the United States is the professional sports industry; it brought in $63 billion in 2015 1. Professional athletes are seen as strong and talented, but how much of their strength and talent is achieved naturally? Performance-enhancing drugs have been increasingly used in professional sports and are prohibited from being used, but should they be prohibited?
Today, PEDs, Performance Enhancing Drugs, have become a major conflict in the world of sports. Hence its name, PEDs increase athlete’s performance and are currently illegal. The fact that they are against the law doesn’t stop over 20% of players to take them. The only way to level the playing field is to legalize PEDs. There are more options than doping that give athletes unfair edges in sports.
Taking pills and injecting testosterone are popular ways that athletes use PEDs. The whole reason that athletes choose to take these drugs is because of the unfair advantages they gain. Athletes take these drugs knowing it will increase their athletic ability and decrease their rest time. Anyone that knowingly takes a drug that will increase their ability is not playing their sport the acceptable way, and obviously this glorified cheating should not be allowed. Evan Argintar, an orthopedic surgeon at MedStar Washington Hospital Center, had this to say about performance enhancing drugs.
In conclusion, Performance Enhancing Drugs should not be tolerated in any sport, whether professional or amatuer. These drugs are highly dangerous and even lethal to all athletes who use them. It is also unfair to athletes who choose not to use these drugs, as they are performing on their hard work and talent and not relying on an “edge” to help them reach their goals. These drugs are highly addictive, just like any other street drug or alcohol and can be fatal in many cases.
Picture this every athlete in sports using drugs no one depends on skill anymore everyone depends on performance enhancing drugs like adrenaline and steroids. Many athletes today use drugs to enhance their skills in all sports. This is a problem because some athletes use their own skills and are getting beaten by athletes who use drugs. Performance enhancement drugs create an unfair advantage over those athletes who choose to rely on their own skill. Banning drugs in sports can make a difference in the athlete 's health Drugs like steroids could decrease the user 's lifespan Performance enhancers, like steroids and other forms of doping have a negative effect on long term health ¨Gary Becker, PhD Professor in the Departments
